Mother’s and Sons by upthehillart
This is one of the pieces of fan creation that inspired this entire fest, to be honest. This piece of art does such an amazing job capturing so many details of what life must have been like for Astoria as a mother, and Scorpius as a son. They start adorably together, chubby baby Scorpius excited about books, of course. They are tucked together in bed, and Astoria looks happy and full of energy, pointing to a part in the book to draw Scorpius’ attention. They are both bathed in sunshine.
But the shadow is creeping in the corner, on the edge of their cozy world.
The second picture is a study in heartbreaking contrast. Scorpius is tucked in bed with his mother, reading the same book from his childhood. This time Astoria is gaunt and sick, and only Scorpius is older and healthy. Scorpius is pointing at the book to show his mother something, the same way she used to point things out to him. Astoria’s eyes are closed, implying she is already too sick to read. In contrast to the first art, the shadow covers nearly all of Astoria, leaving only Scorpius in the light. It’s gutting and gorgeous and everyone should tell upthehillart how amazing this piece is.
Also, bonus, is that you can see the resemblance Scorpius has to Astoria and Draco across all of upthehillart’s Scorpius pieces. Scorpius resembles Draco, as he should. To me at least, there is something heart-wrenching yet hopeful in seeing Scorpius, with his dying mother, seeing the same boy smiling and happy with Albus. Scorpius has them both, and he will be better for it.
